Biography

Christoph Öhm-Kühnle (born 1968 in Herrenberg, near Stuttgart, Germany) received at the age of six years his first piano lessons from his mother, herself also being a recording artist, pianist, and harpsichordist. After private studies, he began college studies with the concert pianist Daniela Ballek, a former student and close friend of Claudio Arrau, and received in 1995 the German State Teachers Degree in piano at the Peter-Cornelius-Conservatory in Mainz. His musical education then brought him to the United States. He initially studied at CSU Fresno, California, with the former Philip-Lorenz-student Andreas Werz, where he received the degree of Master of Music in piano with distinction, besides several awards and scholarships. In the following years, he studied at the University of Miami, Florida, with Ivan Davis (one of the very few former students and close friends of the great virtuoso Vladimir Horowitz). In the year 2000, Öhm-Kühnle received at the University of Miami the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in piano with Award of Academic Merit, which is the highest graduation award at this University. At the University of Miami, he also received several other awards and scholarships, such as a tuition waver scholarship. After his return to Germany, Öhm-Kühnle in addition to his concert and teaching actvitity studied musicology at the University Tübingen, where he graduated in the year 2008 with the degree “Doktor der Philosophie” (Ph.D.) in musicology.

The piano technique handbook by Christoph Öhm-Kühnle and Daniela Ballek on the method of Claudio Arrau (Musikverlag Dohr, Cologne) already was praised before publication by the renowned German music critic Wolf-Eberhard von Lewinsky as the handbook for studying Arraus great technique (Mainzer Allgemeine Zeitung, June 2nd, 2003). Christoph Öhm-Kühnles handbook on the piano works by J.S.Bach and musical rhetoric as a tool for their performance was published in 2002 by Cornetto, Stuttgart, and also was praised highly by the press.

In 2004, Öhm-Kühnle published a CD at Cornetto-Verlag, Stuttgart, with famous and also unknown virtuoso piano works by Franz Liszt, such as the unifinished Carnaval de Venise (Paganini) in Öhm-Kühnles completed version. The worldwide first recording of the greatest piano works by the German composer Gustav Jenner (1865-1920) (Cornetto-Verlag, Stuttgart) is an especially important contribution to the general concert repertoir and to musicologial research.

Music score editions of the composer / piano builder Johann Andreas Streicher (Dohr Verlag, Cologne, Germany) and of J. S. Bach (Carus Verlag, Stuttgart), as well as numerous articles, such as for the standard dictionary Die Musik in Geschichte and Gegenwart, add to Öhm-Kühnles activities during the last years.

In 2010 Öhm-Kühnle published a CD in coproduction with other artists (such as Carmen Weber, flute, Margrit Öhm., Piano and Michael Schmohl, voice) with first recordings of songs, flute compositions and piano works, to which German poet Friedrich Hölderlin once listened to or performed himself, evoking and illustrating the atmosphere in which some of the world's greatest poetry was created and inspired.
